UK passport holders need an e-visa, applied for online before you fly. Most visitors hire a car with a driver rather than driving themselves. Temperatures are the average daytime high in °C.

October to March is the time to go, with warm, dry days and cool nights, especially in the desert, where it can be near freezing after dark in winter. Diwali in October or November and Holi in March are colourful but busy. From April to June it's fiercely hot, often over 40°C. The monsoon from July to September brings rain and green countryside, and the lakes at Udaipur fill up. Temperatures shown are for Jaipur.

Rajasthan: common questions

Is Rajasthan good for a family holiday?

Yes, for families who don't mind long drives and busy streets. Forts, camel rides, desert camps and tiger safaris thrill children, and staying in heritage hotels and old palaces is part of the fun.

How many nights do you need?

Two weeks covers the classic loop of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur, with Ranthambore or Pushkar. With ten days, skip Jaisalmer, which is far out west.

How do you get there?

Fly into Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, then drive to Jaipur, about five hours, or take the train or a short flight. Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur also have airports, which helps on the way home.

Should you drive yourself?

Most visitors don't. Indian roads are chaotic, and a car with a driver costs much less than you might think. Your driver knows the routes and good places to stop.
