Temperatures are the average daytime high in °C.

March to May and October to November are the best times, warm by day and comfortable in the desert. Winter days are sunny and mild, but desert nights drop close to freezing and snow can close the high Atlas pass for a day or two. From June to September the desert is fiercely hot, often over 40°C at Merzouga. Ramadan changes opening hours, so check its dates. Temperatures shown are for Marrakech.

Morocco desert road trip: common questions

Is a Morocco desert road trip good for a family holiday?

Yes, for families who don't mind long days in the car. Camel rides, desert camps and film sets make it an adventure children remember. Break the drive with nights in the Dades Valley.

How many nights do you need?

At least a week, with a night or two in Marrakech, one in Aït Benhaddou or Ouarzazate, one in the gorges and one or two in the desert. Merzouga is about nine hours' drive from Marrakech.

How do you get there?

Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport, about 15 minutes from the medina, with direct flights from across Europe. You can end the trip in Fes and fly home from there.

Do you need a 4x4?

No, the main roads are paved. A 4x4 helps for remote tracks, but most people use an ordinary car or a driver with a minibus.
