Temperatures are the average daytime high in °C.

The season runs from about November to March, the Antarctic summer, with temperatures around freezing and up to 20 hours of daylight. November brings untouched snow and penguins courting, December and January bring the longest days and penguin chicks, and February and March are best for whales. Temperatures on the Peninsula hover around 0 to 8°C. Over the rest of the year the sea ice closes in and no ships sail.

Antarctica cruise: common questions

Is an Antarctica cruise good for a family holiday?

For older children and teenagers with a real love of wildlife, it can be the trip of a lifetime. Some lines have minimum ages, often around eight, and the Drake Passage crossing can be rough for two days each way.

How long is the cruise?

The classic trip from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula takes 10 to 12 nights. Voyages that add the Falklands and South Georgia, with its huge king penguin colonies, take about three weeks.

How do you get there?

Fly to Buenos Aires, then take a domestic flight of about three and a half hours to Ushuaia, where the ships leave from the town pier. Many lines include the Buenos Aires to Ushuaia flight in the price.

How rough is the Drake Passage?

It is one of the roughest seas in the world, and the crossing takes about two days each way. Bring seasickness tablets, or choose a fly-cruise from Punta Arenas that skips it.
