The cruise season runs from May to September, with a handful of sailings in late April and early October. June to August is peak time, with the warmest weather, the longest days and the most excursions running, but also the highest prices. May is often the driest month and a good deal cheaper. August and September bring salmon runs and bears feeding at the rivers, though September is wetter. Whales are around all season. Pack layers and a waterproof whatever the month, as it rains a lot in the Inside Passage and it's chilly near the glaciers.

Alaska's Inside Passage: common questions

Is an Inside Passage cruise good for a family holiday?

Yes. Big ships have kids' clubs and plenty to do on sea days, and children love the whales, glaciers and train rides. Excursions are pricey for a family, so pick one or two big ones. Small expedition ships suit older children who like being outdoors.

How long is the cruise?

Most Inside Passage cruises are 7 nights, round trip from Seattle or Vancouver, calling at three ports and spending a day near a glacier. One-way cruises between Vancouver and Seward or Whittier are also 7 nights. Small-ship trips from Juneau or Ketchikan are usually a week.

How do you get there?

Fly into Seattle-Tacoma Airport for Seattle sailings, which leave from Pier 66 downtown or Pier 91, both a taxi ride away. For Vancouver sailings, fly into Vancouver International and take the Canada Line SkyTrain to Waterfront, next to the Canada Place cruise terminal.

Should you sail from Seattle or Vancouver?

Seattle has the most round trips, usually with a stop in Victoria. Vancouver offers round trips and one-way trips north across the Gulf of Alaska, which suit you if you want to add Denali National Park by land afterwards.
