Temperatures are the average daytime high in °C.

April, May, September and October are the best months, warm enough for hiking but not too hot in the desert. Summer is very hot, often over 35°C around Moab and in Zion, with afternoon thunderstorms that can cause flash floods in the canyons. Winter is cold and quiet, and snow on Bryce's red hoodoos is beautiful, but some roads and trails close. Temperatures shown are for Moab.

Utah's national parks: common questions

Are Utah's national parks good for a family holiday?

Very. Junior Ranger badges, short walks to arches, scrambles on slickrock and swimming in reservoirs make it a great adventure for children. Plan around the heat, with early starts and quiet afternoons.

How many nights do you need?

Ten days to two weeks for all five parks, with a couple of nights near each. With a week, focus on Zion and Bryce, or on Arches and Canyonlands from Moab.

How do you get there?

Fly into Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, then drive about two and a half hours to Zion. Salt Lake City airport is closer to Arches and Moab, so you can fly into one and out of the other.

Do you need to book ahead?

Yes, in spring and autumn. Hotels near the parks fill up, Arches can need a timed entry slot, and popular hikes such as Angels Landing in Zion need a permit.
