The FlÄm Railway runs all year. May to September is the best time, with long days, roaring waterfalls and fjord boats running often. May and June are especially good, when snowmelt makes the waterfalls at their most dramatic and the summer crowds haven't fully arrived. July and August are busiest, with cruise ships in FlÄm, so book train seats early. Winter rides through deep snow are beautiful, but the days are short and there are fewer boats and buses on the rest of the route.

FlÄm Railway: common questions

How long is the train ride?

About an hour for the 20 km between Myrdal and FlÄm, dropping around 860 metres. The full Norway in a Nutshell loop from Bergen takes a long day, or you can stay a night in FlÄm.

Is the FlÄm Railway good for a family holiday?

Yes. The ride is short, the waterfall stop breaks it up, and FlÄm has easy walks, kayaking and boat trips. A night in FlÄm makes the day less rushed.

How do you get there?

Fly into Bergen, take the airport bus or light rail into the city, then the Bergen Line train to Myrdal and change for FlÄm. From Oslo, the train to Myrdal takes around five hours.

What is Norway in a Nutshell?

A popular one-day route linking the Bergen Line, the FlÄm Railway, a fjord boat to Gudvangen and a bus to Voss. You can buy it as a package or book each leg yourself.
