Temperatures are the average daytime high in °C.

Most ships base themselves in the Canaries from October to April, when the islands are the warmest place in Europe, with daytime highs of 21 to 24°C and the sea still warm enough to swim. Christmas, New Year and February half term are the busiest and dearest weeks. In summer most cruise lines move to the Mediterranean, though a few ships sail all year. The islands are breezy, so pack a jumper for evenings on deck.

Canary Islands cruise: common questions

Is a Canary Islands cruise good for a family holiday?

Yes. Sailing times between islands are short, the ports are walkable and there are beaches near most of them. Winter weather is mild rather than hot, which suits younger children.

How long is the cruise?

Most are seven nights, calling at four or five islands, sometimes with Madeira. Longer trips sail from northern Europe and spend the first and last few days at sea.

How do you get there?

Fly into Tenerife South, then transfer to the port at Santa Cruz, about 45 minutes away. Many cruises start in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria instead, a short drive from Gran Canaria Airport. Both airports have direct flights from across Europe.

Which islands are best?

Tenerife and Lanzarote have the most dramatic volcanic scenery, Gran Canaria has the liveliest city, and La Palma is the greenest and quietest. A route with Madeira adds lush gardens and cliff-top views.
