The trains run all year, and both seasons are spectacular. From December to April the plateau is deep in snow and Finse is a ski touring base. June to August brings long light evenings, green valleys and mountain walks, plus the Flåm Railway connection at its busiest. November is grey and dark. Heavy snowstorms occasionally close the line for a day in winter. Temperatures shown are for Oslo.

Bergen Railway: common questions

Is the Bergen Railway good for a family holiday?

Yes. The trains have a family carriage with a play area, the snow or mountain scenery is spectacular, and you can stop off at Finse or Geilo for skiing or walks.

How long is the train ride?

About seven hours from Oslo to Bergen. Many people break the trip with the Flåm Railway and a fjord boat to Gudvangen, an easy day known as Norway in a Nutshell.

How do you get there?

Fly into Oslo Gardermoen Airport, where trains reach Oslo Central Station in about 20 minutes. Bergen-bound trains leave from there several times a day. Fly home from Bergen.

Can you ski from the train?

Yes. Geilo, on the line, is a family ski resort, and Finse is a base for cross-country skiing. Skis travel free on the train, but book space for them.
