The short answer
Bristol Airport's general advice is to arrive at least two hours before a short-haul flight. In practice:
- Hand luggage only, checked in online, short-haul: about 2 hours.
- Dropping a bag: 2 to 2.5 hours, especially early in the morning.
- Long-haul or holiday charter flights: follow your airline's advice, often 3 hours.
- School holidays and the first wave of morning flights: add 30 to 45 minutes.
The deadlines that really matter are your airline's check-in and bag drop closing times, which are in your booking. Miss them and you won't fly, however short the security queue is.
Why early mornings are the tricky part
Bristol is a busy airport with one terminal, and a big share of its flights leave in a wave between about 6am and 8am, when the based easyJet, Ryanair and TUI aircraft head out for their first trips of the day. That means bag drop and security are often at their busiest at exactly the time many people arrive.
Local taxi firms say the most common mistake is leaving home too late for an early flight, because two hours feels like plenty the night before. If your flight is before 8am, give yourself the full two and a half hours, and allow for the drive or bus as well.
Ryanair's new bag drop deadline
From 10 November 2026, Ryanair is closing airport check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before departure across its network, instead of 40 minutes.
- If you're dropping a bag, be at the desk at least an hour before take-off, plus queuing time.
- If you only have hand luggage and have checked in online, it doesn't affect you.
EasyJet, TUI, KLM and the other airlines at Bristol set their own deadlines, and they're in your booking confirmation or app.
Security and liquids
Bristol has installed new security scanners, and recent reports say they let you carry liquids in containers of up to 2 litres and keep them in your bag. When we checked in October 2026, sources didn't all agree on the current rule, so check the security page on Bristol Airport's website before you pack. If in doubt, stick to 100ml containers in a clear bag.
Two things don't change:
- Metal, insulated or double-walled bottles must go through security empty.
- Your return airport may still use the 100ml limit, so don't rely on bringing a big bottle home in your hand luggage.
How long to allow, worked out
Here's how the time adds up for a 06:30 flight to Malaga with one checked bag:
- Bag drop closes 60 minutes before, at 05:30, if you're with Ryanair.
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the bag drop queue in the morning rush.
- Security at peak time can take 20 to 30 minutes, and you'll want to be at the gate around 30 minutes before departure.
That puts your arrival at about 04:30. If you're flying with hand luggage only, you could arrive closer to 05:00.
For a midday flight to Tenerife on a weekday in winter, two hours is usually comfortable even with a bag. In the summer holidays, add extra time for everything.
Getting there
Bristol Airport is on the A38, about 8 miles south-west of the city centre, and there's no rail link:
- A1 Airport Flyer bus: runs between the airport, Bristol Temple Meads station and the city centre, around the clock, about every 20 minutes at busy times. Allow 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, and check the timetable for very early flights.
- Car: the A38 can be slow at rush hour and in bad weather. There's a charge for the drop-off zone, so check current prices, and pre-book parking for the best rate.
- Taxi: around 25 minutes from the city centre off-peak, but 35 to 45 minutes in traffic.
If you're coming from Bath, Weston-super-Mare or further afield, there are other Airport Flyer and coach routes. Check before you travel, as timetables change.
Five ways to make it easier
1. Check in online and have your boarding pass on your phone. 2. Travel with hand luggage only if you can, to skip bag drop. 3. Avoid the 6am to 8am rush when choosing flights, if you have the choice. 4. Book fast track in school holidays if you're short on time. 5. Check your airline's app the night before for any changes to bag drop times.
