The short answer
For most flights from Birmingham:
- Hand luggage only, checked in online, short-haul: aim to arrive about 2 hours before your flight. Outside busy times you can often manage with less.
- Dropping a bag, short-haul: allow 2 to 2.5 hours.
- Long-haul, for example to Dubai or Doha: allow 3 hours.
- Early mornings and school holidays: add 30 minutes to all of these.
These are our suggestions, not airport rules. The deadlines that actually matter are your airline's check-in and bag drop closing times, which are in your booking. Bag drop desks usually open two to three hours before departure, so arriving much earlier than that just means waiting.
The 2-litre liquids rule
Birmingham is one of the UK airports with new CT security scanners. When we checked in October 2026:
- You can carry liquids in containers of up to 2 litres each, with no limit on how many, and leave them in your bag.
- Laptops, tablets and other electrical items can stay in your bag too.
- Metal and vacuum flasks still need to be emptied, because the scanners can't see inside them.
This makes security quicker and simpler. Birmingham did briefly go back to the 100ml rule in 2024 while the new system was fine-tuned, so check the airport's website before you travel in case anything changes. And remember the airport you fly home from may still have the 100ml limit.
Drop your bags the day before
If you have an early flight, Birmingham's day-before bag drop lets you check in your hold luggage the evening before and go straight to security in the morning. When we checked, the airport listed:
- easyJet: 16:00 to 20:00, for flights leaving before 09:00 the next day. It's free and started in January 2026.
- Jet2: 16:30 to 21:00, for flights before 12:00.
- Ryanair: 17:00 to 21:00, for flights up to 09:00.
- TUI: 14:00 to 21:00, for flights before 12:00.
You'll need to have checked in online first. Hours, desks and conditions change, so check the airport's bag drop page before you rely on it, and look at the terminal screens for the right desk on the night. The airport has offered discounted parking while you drop your bags, if you show your bag drop receipt.
Ryanair's new bag drop deadline
From 10 November 2026, Ryanair is closing airport check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before departure across its network, instead of 40 minutes.
- If you're dropping a bag, be at the desk at least an hour before take-off, plus queuing time.
- If you only have hand luggage and have checked in online, it doesn't affect you.
Other airlines at Birmingham, including easyJet, Jet2, TUI and the long-haul carriers, set their own deadlines. Long-haul check-in usually closes earlier, which is why we suggest 3 hours.
How long to allow, worked out
Here's how the time adds up for a 06:30 flight to Malaga with one checked bag on a busy morning:
- Bag drop closes an hour before, at 05:30, if you're with Ryanair.
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the bag drop queue at peak time.
- Security at its busiest can take 20 to 30 minutes, and you should be at the gate around 30 minutes before departure.
That puts your arrival at about 04:30, two hours before the flight. Use the day-before bag drop and you could arrive around 05:15 instead.
For a midday winter flight to Tenerife on a weekday with hand luggage only, an hour and a half is often enough. For an Emirates flight to Dubai, allow the full three hours.
Getting there
Birmingham Airport is about 8 miles east of the city centre, next to the M42 and the NEC:
- Train: Birmingham International station is linked to the terminal by the free Air-Rail Link shuttle, which takes a couple of minutes. Trains from Birmingham New Street take around 10 to 15 minutes, and there are direct trains from London Euston, Coventry and beyond.
- Car: there's a charge for the drop-off area outside the terminal, so check current prices and allow for traffic on the M42 and M6 at rush hour.
- Bus and taxi: local buses run from the city, and there's a taxi rank outside arrivals.
The train is often the least stressful option for early flights, but check the first train times before you plan around it.
Five ways to make it easier
1. Check in online and have your boarding pass on your phone before you leave home. 2. Use the day-before bag drop for early flights. 3. Avoid the early morning peak if you can choose your flight: the first wave of departures makes 4am to 7am the busiest time. 4. Book fast track in school holidays if you're short on time. 5. Know your return airport's liquids rules, so your 2-litre bottle doesn't get binned on the way home.
