May, June and September are the best months for the Romantic Road, with mild weather, long days and the countryside at its greenest. July and August are warm but busy, especially in Rothenburg and at Neuschwanstein, where coach tours arrive by mid-morning. September and October bring the Franconian wine harvest and autumn colours. Winter is cold and many towns are quiet, but December is lovely for the Christmas markets in Würzburg, Rothenburg and Augsburg.

Romantic Road: common questions

Is the Romantic Road good for a family holiday?

Yes. Children love the castles and town walls, Rothenburg's medieval crime museum and the Christmas shop, and the drives between towns are short. Füssen also has lakes for swimming and summer toboggan runs nearby.

How many nights do you need?

The road is about 400 km, so five to seven nights works well. Good places to stay are Würzburg, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühl or Nördlingen, Augsburg and Füssen.

How do you get there?

Fly into Frankfurt Airport, hire a car and drive about an hour and a half to Würzburg, where the route begins. At the southern end, Munich Airport is around two hours from Füssen, so a one-way hire is handy.

Can you do the Romantic Road without a car?

Yes, though it's slower. Trains reach Würzburg, Rothenburg, Augsburg and Füssen, with local buses filling some gaps. A car makes it much easier to stop in the smaller towns and villages.
