September and October are the best months for the drive, with the clearest skies, the warmest sea air and fewer crowds once the school holidays are over. Spring brings green hills and wildflowers, while May to August is busy and often starts with thick coastal fog that burns off by lunchtime, known locally as June gloom. Winter is mild but it's the rainy season, and storms can bring landslides that close parts of Highway 1 through Big Sur, sometimes for months. Always check the Caltrans road conditions before you set off.

Pacific Coast Highway: common questions

Is the Pacific Coast Highway good for a family holiday?

Yes, if you keep the driving days short. Big Sur has easy walks and beaches, Monterey has the aquarium, and the elephant seals near San Simeon are a hit with children. The road is narrow and twisty in places, so allow time for car sickness stops.

How many nights do you need?

Allow at least five nights to drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles without rushing, stopping in Monterey or Carmel, Big Sur or Cambria, and Santa Barbara. A week or more lets you add a few nights in San Francisco or Los Angeles.

How do you get there?

Fly into San Francisco International Airport, pick up a hire car and head south via Half Moon Bay or Santa Cruz to Monterey. The drive ends in Los Angeles, so drop the car at LAX and fly home from there.

Which way should you drive?

Most people drive north to south, from San Francisco to Los Angeles. That puts you in the lane next to the sea, so the views are better and it's easier to pull into the lay-bys.
