Cruises run most of the year, but the dry season from November to March is the most comfortable, with sunny days around 31 to 33°C. From August to November the river is high, the scenery is greener and some boats can sail further upstream to Siem Reap. March to May is very hot, and from May to October there are heavy afternoon downpours, though rarely all day. Tết, Vietnamese New Year in late January or February, is colourful but busy.

Mekong river cruise: common questions

Is a Mekong cruise good for a family holiday?

Yes for curious older children who enjoy markets, boats and temples. River boats are small, with few facilities for young children, and some lines set a minimum age, so check before you book.

How long is the cruise?

Most sail seven nights between the Ho Chi Minh City area and Phnom Penh. Many people add a few days in Ho Chi Minh City at one end and Angkor Wat at the other, for about two weeks in all.

How do you get there?

Fly into Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, then transfer by road to the boat at My Tho, about two hours away. At the Cambodian end, fly home from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.

Is it very hot?

Yes. Even in the dry season it's over 30°C. Boats are air-conditioned and excursions are timed for the morning and late afternoon, so bring sun hats and plenty of water.
