Temperatures are the average daytime high in °C.

Late spring and early autumn are the best times. May and June are warm and green, and September and early October bring the grape harvest, when some quintas let you help pick or tread grapes. July and August are very hot inland, often well over 35°C, so plan for early starts and long lunches. Late October and November turn the vines gold and red. Winter is cool and quiet, with some quintas closed, though the train runs all year. A historic steam train runs between Régua and Tua on some summer days.

Douro Valley: common questions

How many nights do you need?

You can ride the line as a day trip from Porto, but two or three nights in Pinhão or Régua lets you visit quintas, walk among the vines and see the valley at sunset.

Is the Douro Valley good for a family holiday?

It suits older children who enjoy the train and boat rides, but much of the area is about wine. Families might prefer a quinta with a pool and day trips by train.

How do you get there?

Fly into Porto, then take the metro into the city and walk to São Bento or Campanhã station. Direct trains run up the Douro line to Régua, Pinhão and Pocinho several times a day.

Do you need a car?

No, the train reaches the main towns. A car or taxi helps to reach hilltop quintas and viewpoints, but the roads are winding and you'll want to taste wine.
