Temperatures are the average daytime high in °C.

July to mid October is the season. Summer is warm, around 24°C, and best for whale watching and swimming, though the sea is cold. Late September and the first half of October bring blazing autumn colour, and the Celtic Colours music festival, the busiest time of all. From November to May many places close, and snow can make the highland roads tricky.

Cabot Trail: common questions

Is the Cabot Trail good for a family holiday?

Yes. Short trails, whale-watching trips, beaches and moose spotting keep children busy, and the loop splits into easy drives of a few hours a day.

How many nights do you need?

The loop takes about five hours without stops, but give it three or four nights. Add Halifax, Lunenburg and Peggy's Cove for a week in Nova Scotia.

How do you get there?

Fly into Halifax Stanfield International Airport, then drive about four and a half hours to Baddeck, the usual start. There are direct flights to Halifax from London in summer.

Which way round should you drive?

Clockwise puts you on the inside lane on the cliff sections, which nervous drivers may prefer. Anticlockwise gives passengers the sea views. Both work well.
