How early should you arrive at Luton Airport?

Luton's advice is to follow your airline, which usually means two hours for a short-haul flight. But the early morning rush, the road in from the M1 and bag drop deadlines decide whether that's enough.

The short answer

London Luton Airport tells passengers to arrive when their airline advises, which for most flights is two to three hours before departure. For the flights most people take from Luton, that works out as:

  • Hand luggage only, checked in online: about 2 hours.
  • Dropping a bag: 2.5 hours, especially on a morning flight.
  • School holidays, bank holidays and flights before 9am: add another 30 minutes.
  • Driving in at peak times: allow extra for the road into the airport, which can queue back towards the M1.

The times that really matter are your airline's bag drop and gate closing times, which are in your booking. Checking in online saves you a queue, but it doesn't move those deadlines.

Why mornings are the problem at Luton

Luton is almost entirely a short-haul, low-cost airport. EasyJet and Wizz Air have big bases there, and their aircraft all try to leave early so they can fit in several trips a day. That stacks a large share of departures between about 6am and 9am.

So the time most people arrive is the time the bag drop queues and security lanes are busiest. If your flight leaves before 9am, don't treat two hours as generous. Two and a half is more comfortable, and three in the summer holidays isn't overcautious.

A lunchtime or afternoon flight on a weekday in winter is a different story. Two hours is usually plenty, even with a bag.

Bag drop deadlines by airline

Each airline sets its own cut-off, and they're stricter than people expect:

  • Ryanair: from 10 November 2026, Ryanair closes airport check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before departure across its network, instead of 40 minutes.
  • Wizz Air: bag drop at Luton is reported to close 60 minutes before departure. Check your booking, as Wizz is strict.
  • easyJet: usually 40 minutes, but check your booking or the app.

If you arrive after bag drop has closed, you won't be able to check a bag, however quick security is. With only hand luggage and a mobile boarding pass, you can head straight to security.

Twilight Bag Drop for early flights

Luton offers Twilight Bag Drop for some early morning flights. You drop your hold luggage the evening before, then come back in the morning with just your hand luggage and go straight to security.

When we checked in October 2026, it was available with easyJet and Wizz Air for flights before 9am. The airlines, times and any charges can change, so check on the airport's website before you rely on it.

It's most useful if you live close enough to pop over the night before, or you're staying at an airport hotel. For a 6am flight, it can save you 30 to 45 minutes of queuing at the worst time of day.

Security and liquids

Luton has new security scanners, but when we checked in October 2026 the 100ml limit on liquids still applied. Containers in your hand luggage still need to be 100ml or less.

The airport's security page will tell you whether you still need to take liquids out of your bag and how to pack them. Rules at UK airports have changed a lot recently, so check it a few days before you fly rather than relying on what you did last time.

Security is usually quick outside the morning peak. In the early rush, allow 20 to 30 minutes, and longer in the summer holidays. Fast track is sold on the airport's website if you're short of time.

Getting there

How long the last part of the journey takes depends on how you travel:

  • Train and the DART: trains from London St Pancras, other Thameslink stations and the Midland Main Line stop at Luton Airport Parkway. From there, the Luton DART shuttle takes a few minutes to reach the terminal. You can buy a through ticket that includes it, or pay about £5 for the DART on its own.
  • Car: the airport is close to junction 10 of the M1, but the approach road can queue at busy times. The Express Drop-Off by the terminal costs £7 for up to 10 minutes and goes up by the minute after that, so check current prices. There's also a free drop-off at a car park with a shuttle bus, which takes longer.
  • Coach: National Express and other coaches run to the airport from London and further afield.

For a very early flight, check the first train or coach times. They may not get you there in time, and that's when an airport hotel or a taxi is worth it.

Worked example

Here's how the time adds up for a 06:45 easyJet flight to Malaga with one checked bag:

  • Bag drop closes 40 minutes before, at 06:05.
  • Allow 30 minutes for the bag drop queue in the morning rush, and 30 minutes for security.
  • Aim to be at the gate 30 minutes before departure.

That puts your arrival at about 04:45, two hours before the flight. If you've used Twilight Bag Drop the night before, you could arrive closer to 05:15. With Ryanair after 10 November, move everything 20 minutes earlier, because its bag drop closes an hour before departure.

Common questions

Is 2 hours enough at Luton Airport?

For a short-haul flight with hand luggage only and online check-in, two hours is usually enough. Allow two and a half hours or more for flights before 9am, if you're dropping a bag, or in the school holidays.

Does Luton Airport still have the 100ml liquids rule?

Yes. When we checked in October 2026, Luton still limited liquids in hand luggage to 100ml per container, despite its new scanners. Check the airport's security page before you fly, as the rules are changing.

What is Twilight Bag Drop at Luton?

It lets you drop your hold luggage the evening before an early flight, so you only need to go through security in the morning. Check which airlines and flight times it covers on the airport's website.

How much is drop-off at Luton Airport?

The Express Drop-Off by the terminal was £7 for up to 10 minutes when we checked, with charges rising after that. There's also a free drop-off at a car park with a shuttle bus.
