The short answer
Glasgow Airport's own advice is to arrive:
- 2 hours before a domestic flight, for example to London or Belfast.
- 3 hours before an international flight, including short trips to Europe.
- Through security at least 1 hour before departure, so you have time to reach the gate.
In practice, many people flying to Europe with hand luggage only and a mobile boarding pass arrive closer to two and a half hours before. That works most days outside the school holidays. But if you're dropping a bag, flying early in the morning or travelling in the summer, stick to the full three hours.
The deadlines that really matter are your airline's bag drop and gate closing times, which are in your booking.
Why three hours for Europe?
Three hours can sound a lot for a two-and-a-half-hour flight to Spain. The reason is the morning rush. Jet2, easyJet and TUI all have aircraft based at Glasgow, and most of them leave in a wave between about 6am and 8am. Bag drop and security are at their busiest at the same time.
Glasgow is a single-terminal airport, so there's no quieter terminal to escape to. If your flight leaves in that early wave, three hours isn't overcautious, especially in July and August or around the Scottish school holidays, which start earlier than in England.
For a midday flight on a weekday in winter, two hours is usually comfortable even with a bag. Domestic flights are simpler still, as there are no passport checks at the gate.
Bag drop deadlines
Each airline sets its own cut-off for checking in a bag:
- Ryanair: from 10 November 2026, Ryanair closes airport check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before departure across its network, instead of 40 minutes.
- Jet2, easyJet, TUI and others: check your booking or the airline's app. Long-haul flights usually close earlier than short-haul ones.
If bag drop has closed, you won't be able to check a bag, however short the security queue is. With only hand luggage and a mobile boarding pass, you can go straight to security.
Security and liquids
Glasgow's advice in its recent summer travel tips was that the liquids rules remained unchanged, but that you didn't need to take liquids or electronics out of your bag. Other sources say the 100ml limit is still strictly enforced.
The safest approach is to check the security page on the airport's website a few days before you fly, and pack liquids in 100ml containers unless it clearly says otherwise. Rules at UK airports have changed a lot recently, and your return airport may have different rules again.
Metal, insulated or double-walled bottles must go through security empty, so fill them up on the other side.
Getting there
Glasgow Airport is about 8 miles west of the city centre, next to the M8. There's no train station at the airport.
- Glasgow Airport Express (500 bus): runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day, from Buchanan Bus Station. It leaves about every 10 minutes for most of the day, less often early in the morning, and takes about 25 minutes. A single was about £8.50 when we checked, but fares change.
- Train: the nearest station is Paisley Gilmour Street, with frequent trains from Glasgow Central. From there it's a short bus or taxi ride to the terminal.
- Car: the drop-off area outside the terminal costs £7 for up to 15 minutes, rising steeply if you stay longer. You can drop off for free at the Long Stay car park and take the shuttle bus, but allow extra time for it.
The M8 can be slow at rush hour, and there are sometimes roadworks near the airport. For an early flight, check the bus times the night before, or book a taxi.
Worked example
Here's how it adds up for a 06:30 Jet2 flight to Tenerife with one checked bag:
- Aim to be through security by 05:30, an hour before departure.
- Allow 30 to 45 minutes for bag drop and security in the morning rush.
- Add 15 minutes for parking or the walk from the bus.
That puts your arrival at about 04:30 to 04:45, roughly two hours before the flight. The airport's advice of three hours (03:30) gives you a buffer for a really busy morning. For a family holiday in the first week of the school summer holidays, take the buffer.
For a 13:00 flight to London with hand luggage only, arriving at 11:30 is usually fine.
Where could you go from Glasgow?
Glasgow has a good mix of winter sun, ski and city routes. Our guide to where you can fly direct from Glasgow Airport lists them. For winter sun, Tenerife and Lanzarote are easy picks. For a winter city break, try Krakow or Budapest. For snow and the northern lights, look at Tromsø.
