The short answer
- Hand luggage only, checked in online: be at security about 2 hours before departure.
- With a bag to drop: arrive about 2.5 hours before, especially on Ryanair flights from 10 November 2026 (see below).
- Early mornings (roughly 5 to 9am) and school holidays: add another 30 minutes.
- Long-haul: about 3 hours.
These are the timings most airlines and travel guides suggest for Stansted. The deadlines that actually matter are set by your airline and shown on your booking. We checked this advice in October 2026; rules change, so always check the airline's and Stansted Airport's current guidance before you travel.
Ryanair's new bag drop deadline
Most flights from Stansted are with Ryanair, so its rules matter more here than anywhere. From Tuesday 10 November 2026, Ryanair is closing airport check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before departure, instead of 40 minutes. That applies across its network, including Stansted.
What that means in practice:
- If you're dropping a bag, you need to be at the bag drop desk at least an hour before take-off, plus however long the queue takes. For a 7am flight, the desk closes at 6am.
- If you only have hand luggage and check in online, the change doesn't affect you. Go straight to security.
- Check in online either way. Ryanair charges a fee to check in at the airport.
Other airlines at Stansted, including Jet2, easyJet and TUI, set their own deadlines, which are on your booking.
Security and liquids
Stansted has one terminal, so at least you can't go to the wrong one. Security queues are usually shortest from mid-morning to early afternoon. The worst times are the early-morning rush, roughly 5 to 9am, when lots of flights leave at once, and the start of school holidays and half terms.
On liquids, don't assume Stansted works like Gatwick or Heathrow. When we checked, Stansted was still applying the 100ml rule: liquids must be in containers of 100ml or less, in a clear bag. New scanners are being brought in at UK airports, and not every lane works the same way, so check the airport's current security page before you pack.
If you're flying at a busy time, Stansted's paid Fast Track lane can save time. Whether it's worth it depends on when you fly.
How long to allow, worked out
Here's how the timings add up for a few typical trips:
- Weekend city break, hand luggage only, Friday 2pm flight: arrive about 2 hours before. Gates can be a walk or a short transit train ride from the departure lounge, so head over when your gate is shown.
- Ryanair to Málaga with a hold bag, 6.30am flight in late November: bag drop closes at 5.30am under the new rule. Arrive by about 4 to 4.15am to allow for the bag drop queue and early-morning security.
- Summer holiday to Mallorca, two bags, 7am Saturday flight: arrive about 3 hours before. It's one of the busiest times of the week.
- Winter sun to Tenerife or Lanzarote: treat Saturday and Sunday mornings as busy all year, and allow about 2.5 hours with bags.
Getting there
- Stansted Express runs from London Liverpool Street, with trains every 15 minutes through most of the day and an average journey of about 48 minutes. Some trains also stop at Tottenham Hale.
- Coaches run to Stansted from several London stops and towns across the region, often cheaper than the train but slower when traffic is bad.
- By car, Stansted is just off the M11. Pre-booked parking is far cheaper than turning up, and the drop-off zone outside the terminal charges a fee.
For very early flights, check the first train will get you there in time; the first services may not. Many people book an airport hotel the night before a 6am flight.
Five ways to make it easier
- Check in online, especially with Ryanair, and save your boarding pass to your phone.
- Travel with hand luggage only if you can, so the bag drop deadline doesn't apply.
- Pack liquids to the 100ml rule unless the airport's website tells you otherwise.
- Leave extra time from 10 November if you're dropping a bag with Ryanair.
- Watch the screens and go to your gate as soon as it's shown.
