The short answer
Newcastle Airport's advice is to leave enough time to check in and get through security, and to follow your airline's guidance. Some airlines open check-in up to three and a half hours before departure. In practice:
- Hand luggage only, short-haul, checked in online: about 2 hours.
- Dropping a bag on a short-haul flight: 2 to 2.5 hours, and the longer end before 8am.
- Long-haul, such as Dubai: about 3 hours.
- School holidays and bank holidays: add another 30 minutes.
The deadlines that really matter are your airline's bag drop and gate closing times, which are in your booking.
When it gets busy
Newcastle is a single-terminal airport, and Jet2, easyJet and TUI all have aircraft based there. Like most UK holiday airports, a lot of flights leave in an early wave, roughly between 6am and 8am, so bag drop and security are busiest at the same time.
The summer holidays are the other pinch point. In the North East, schools break up in late July, and the first weekend of the holidays is one of the busiest days of the year at the airport.
A midday flight on a weekday in winter is usually much calmer. Two hours is comfortable, even with a bag.
Bag drop deadlines
Airlines set their own cut-off for checked bags:
- Ryanair: from 10 November 2026, Ryanair closes airport check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before departure across its network, instead of 40 minutes.
- Jet2, easyJet, TUI, Emirates and others: check your booking or the airline's app. Long-haul flights usually close earlier.
If bag drop has closed, you won't be able to check a bag. With only hand luggage and a mobile boarding pass, you can go straight to security.
Security and liquids
When we checked in October 2026, Newcastle's security page said liquids in hand luggage must be in containers of 100ml or less, inside a single clear, resealable bag of up to 1 litre. Essential medicines and baby food can be carried in larger amounts but may be checked.
Rules at UK airports have changed a lot recently, so check the airport's security page a few days before you fly. Two things to remember:
- Pack your liquids bag where you can reach it, so you don't hold up the queue.
- Empty any water bottles before security, and fill them up airside.
Getting there
Newcastle Airport is about 6 miles north-west of the city centre:
- Metro: the airport has its own Metro station on the Green line, connected directly to the terminal. It takes about 25 minutes from Newcastle Central Station, with trains roughly every 12 minutes. Check the first train if your flight is early, as services start at around 5.45am on weekdays and later on Sundays.
- Car: the Express drop-off by the terminal costs £6 for up to 10 minutes and goes up quickly after that. You pay by card on the way out. There's a free waiting and drop-off zone at Callerton Parkway, with a shuttle to the terminal, if you allow extra time.
- Taxi: around 20 minutes from the city centre outside rush hour.
If you're coming from further afield, for example Sunderland or Durham, check Metro, train and bus times the night before.
Checklist for the night before
Most airport stress starts at home, not at security. The night before, check in online and download your boarding passes to your phone, and screenshot them in case the signal drops in the queue. Put liquids in a clear one-litre bag at the top of your hand luggage so they come out in one move. If you are only taking cabin bags, weigh them: budget airlines are strict about size and weight at the gate, and paying there costs far more than adding a bag online.
Check which terminal entrance your airline uses and whether your flight time has changed, since early morning departures are sometimes moved by 10 or 15 minutes. If you are driving, book parking in advance, because turning up and paying on the day is usually the most expensive option. Finally, set the alarm for the time you need to leave the house, not the time you need to be at the airport.
Worked example
Here's how it adds up for a 06:15 Jet2 flight to Lanzarote with one checked bag:
- Aim to have your bag dropped by about 05:00.
- Allow 30 minutes for the bag drop queue and 30 minutes for security in the morning rush.
- Get to the gate around 30 minutes before departure.
That puts your arrival at about 04:00. The first Metro won't get you there in time, so drive, get a lift or book a taxi.
For a 13:00 easyJet flight with hand luggage only, arriving at 11:00 by Metro is usually plenty.
