How early should you arrive at Liverpool John Lennon Airport?

For most short-haul flights from Liverpool, two hours is enough, and a little more if you are dropping a bag on an early flight. Here's how to work out your time, from bag drop deadlines to the bus and the cheapest place to be dropped off.

The short answer

Liverpool John Lennon Airport advises arriving at least two hours before your flight, and following any earlier time your airline gives you. In practice:

  • Hand luggage only, checked in online: about 2 hours.
  • Dropping a bag: 2 to 2.5 hours, and the longer end for flights before 8am.
  • School holidays and bank holiday weekends: add another 30 minutes.

The times that really matter are your airline's bag drop closing time and gate closing time, which are in your booking confirmation and the airline's app.

How busy does Liverpool get?

Liverpool has a single, compact terminal, so you won't need to allow time for moving between terminals or long walks to the gate. It is still busy: 2025 was the airport's busiest year, with more than 5.6 million passengers.

The pinch point is the early morning wave. easyJet and Ryanair both have aircraft based at Liverpool, and many of their first flights leave between about 6am and 8am, so bag drop and security fill up at the same time. Ryanair is adding a sixth based aircraft for winter 2026/27, with 27 routes.

A weekday flight in the middle of the day, outside the school holidays, is usually much quieter. Two hours is comfortable then, even with a bag.

Bag drop deadlines

Each airline sets its own cut-off for checked bags:

  • Ryanair: from 10 November 2026, Ryanair closes airport check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before departure across its network, instead of 40 minutes.
  • easyJet and other airlines: check your booking. easyJet's bag drop usually closes 40 minutes before departure, but confirm it for your flight.

Miss bag drop and you won't be able to check your bag in. With hand luggage only and a boarding pass on your phone, you can go straight to security.

Security and liquids

Some UK airports now allow larger liquids in hand luggage, but Liverpool isn't one of them. When we checked in October 2026, the airport's security page still said each liquid must be in a container of 100ml or less, inside a single clear, resealable plastic bag about 20cm by 20cm.

Medicines and baby food can be carried in larger amounts but may be checked. Rules at UK airports keep changing, so look at the airport's security page a few days before you fly.

To get through faster:

  • Pack your liquids bag at the top of your hand luggage.
  • Empty water bottles before security and refill them airside.
  • Wear shoes and a belt you can take off easily, in case you are asked to.

Getting there

By bus: the 500 runs between the airport and Liverpool city centre, including Liverpool ONE bus station and Lime Street. The airport says it takes about 30 minutes and runs every 30 minutes from early morning until around midnight. The 86A links the airport with Liverpool South Parkway station in about 8 minutes, and trains from there reach Lime Street in around 10 minutes.

Being dropped off: the Express Drop Off car park is closest to the terminal. When we checked, it cost about £5 to £6 for 10 minutes, rising with time, and the barriers take cards only. Drop Off 2, about 400m from the terminal, was free for up to 40 minutes.

Parking: booking ahead is almost always cheaper than turning up and paying on the day.

Prices and timetables change, so check the airport's transport pages before you travel.

Worked example

Say you have a Ryanair flight to Krakow at 7.30am on a Saturday in December, with a bag to check in.

  • Bag drop closes at 6.30am under Ryanair's new 60-minute rule.
  • Aim to be at bag drop by about 5.30am, which gives you time to queue in the early rush.
  • That puts you at the terminal at around 5.15am, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes before departure.

With only hand luggage and a boarding pass on your phone, you could arrive at around 5.45am and go straight to security. Leave a little more time if you are being dropped at the free car park and walking in.

Checklist for the night before

Check in online and save your boarding pass to your phone, with a screenshot in case the signal drops. Put your liquids bag at the top of your hand luggage. If you're only taking cabin bags, check the size and weight rules: budget airlines are strict at the gate, and paying there costs much more than adding a bag online.

Check your flight time again, since early departures sometimes move by a few minutes. If you are taking the 500, check the first bus of the morning, because very early flights may need a taxi or a lift instead. Then set your alarm for the time you need to leave home, not the time you need to be at the airport.
