Things to do with the family

TOUR

Lagoon boat trip

A slow boat or sailing trip to the Pirates' Channel and the white-sand shallows, with swim stops.

OUTDOORS

Paddleboarding at sunrise

The water is flat and shallow in places, so it's a good spot for children to try a board or kayak.

TICKETED

Cenote Azul

A very deep, round sinkhole on the lagoon's edge, with a restaurant and swimming for confident swimmers.

TICKETED

Los Rápidos

A gentle current at the south end of the lagoon carries you along with a life jacket. Stromatolites grow here, so don't stand on them.

TICKETED

Fuerte de San Felipe

A small star-shaped fort above the lagoon, with a museum about pirates and the town's history.

TICKETED

Chacchoben

Maya temples in the forest, under an hour's drive north, and far quieter than the ruins near Cancún.

Bacalar: common questions

Is Bacalar good for a family holiday?

Yes, for families who like water and a slow pace. The lagoon has no waves and is shallow near the shore, though some docks drop into deep water. It's a small town, not a resort, so there are no big kids' clubs.

How many nights do you need?

Four to seven nights is plenty. Many families add it to a Cancún or Tulum trip.

How do you get there from the UK?

Fly to Cancún, then drive about four hours south or take an ADO bus. Chetumal airport is closer but has flights from Mexico City, not the UK.

Is the lagoon safe for swimming?

Yes, the water is calm and fresh. Use reef-safe sun cream or a rash vest, and keep off the stromatolites, which are ancient living rocks.
